For many of us, traditional expressions of faith were never (or are no longer) a part of our lives so it’s hard at times to know how to mark–or even if it’s necessary to mark–the important events in our lives. One of the things that traditional expressions of faith tend to be good at is facilitating ceremony, a ceremony or service that makes space for us and our community to attend to the losses in our lives. With or without a faith component, ceremony matters. It helps us to acknowledge and begin to make sense of these life-altering circumstances. Every life is an important life and taking time–set apart time–to honour, celebrate, grieve, and remember matters. Ceremony matters.
